There are over 60 Black-owned breweries in the United States. Thinking about when we entered our craft beer journey 8 years ago, this is an amazing feat. However, that is still less than one percent ownership of breweries.
For many Blacks, there is always the uncomfortable feeling of “being the only one” no matter the venue. Some will deny this. But, trust me. They walked into the taproom an immediately scanned the area for another Black face. We do it almost subconsciously.
Though there have been some missteps and bad judgement by a very small number of breweries that have found themselves in hot water over insensitive statements or actions (I will not mention any names), the majority of minority patrons have had good experiences. Lady T and I have always felt welcomed in the places that we have visited. We feel right at home in our local establishments.
Many breweries have been vocal in their support of the Black community, raising money through selling merchandise and beer, with proceeds going to different organizations. There are many Black craft beer bloggers and influencers out there. So, we are definitely not alone. We will continue to push our way into the mainstream. Believe me. We won’t stop. We can’t stop.
