This Saturday is national Mead day. This is one of my favorite times of the year. As I have stated before, I am a self-proclaimed Mead aficionado.
The America Homebrewers Association officially began Mead Day in 2002. It is usually held on August the 5th of each year. However, Mead has been around for a very long time. It dates back as far as 6500 B.C. Mead is essentially the fermentation of water and honey. Many cultures refer to mead as ‘honey-wine’, which has caused many to debate whether Mead is a beer or wine. Mead can consist of different ingredients such as hops, different grains, spices and fruits.
Here are some of the Meads that we recommend that you have on National Mead Day.
Zombie Killer by B. Nektar Meadery
Sweet, creamy honey rounds the flavor and balances the tartness of the cherry. Light carbonation lifts the flavor while the honey smooths the overall mouthfeel. Finishes crisp and clean.
Viking Blod by Dansk Mjød
This is a Nordic honey wine with hibiscus and hops that is based on a recipe from the 1700s.
Bananas Foster Forever by Crafted Artisan Meadery
There is an awesome mix of honey, banana, coffee, and raspberry. Nice long finish.
